What is Six Sigma?
Six Sigma is a structured method for optimizing the efficiency, quality and effectiveness of business processes. It is about doing the right things and doing things right. The main goal is to reduce variation in processes so that products and services consistently meet customer requirements and expectations. It is a data-driven approach aimed at eliminating defects, waste and inconsistency in any type of process.
The five phases of Six Sigma: DMAIC
The methodology is based on a combination of statistical techniques and proven quality principles. The foundation lies in the quality philosophy of William Edwards Deming and is elaborated in five project phases, known as DMAIC:
- Define: Define the problem, customer needs and project objectives
- Measure: Measure the current performance of the process
- Analysis: Analyze data to identify the cause of problems
- Improve: Improve the process by developing and implementing solutions
- Control: Manage and secure improvements so that the results are lasting
The customer requirement is the starting point of every project. Organizations working according to this methodology are often distinguished by high customer satisfaction, low failure costs and a strong focus on continuous improvement.
