A Web service can be described as an interface of an application component that can be accessed via standard Web protocols involving communication without human intervention.

Web services provide a solution to communication problems between systems. It is the way that devices and applications communicate over the worldwide Web. When two systems, over the Web, need to communicate with each other, it is often done through a Web service. They are remote APIs.

Often web services are outside the private or closed network but are still approachable. In addition, web services are generally generic in invocation. Web services therefore last longer and provide a better ROI (Return On Investment). Software developers can decide in which programming language they want to call web services or in which language they want to develop a web service.
