Pull

A Pull System is a system from Lean manufacturing, where production is driven by demand. The product is not “pushed” to the next subprocess, but the need in the chain is sensed and the product is “pulled” through the process in a flow this way.

Pull is one of the 5 principles within the Lean philosophy and the opposite of the push strategy.

An organization is protected from stockpiling because production is based on customer demand. In each process step, outflow of (intermediate) products is a signal for new inflow from the previous process step. This ensures minimal intermediate stocks in the process, and a minimal amount of work in progress. Fewer products will be made in unsolicited excess.
