What is compliance?
Compliance is an individual or organization’s adherence to applicable laws and regulations. It involves compliance with external standards and internal agreements.
What is the goal?
The goal is to mitigate risks and prevent harm that results from failure to comply with rules. Compliance can apply industry-wide, but can also relate to internal processes and behavior.
It goes beyond simply communicating regulations. Compliance must be actively monitored, often by a compliance officer who oversees internal compliance and reporting.
Organizations must also be accountable externally, for example, to auditors, regulators or customers. The requirements vary from organization to organization and depend on internal and external factors.
