What is continuous improvement?
Continuous improvement is an ongoing long-term approach to improving processes, products and services to better meet customer needs, create higher customer value and/or eliminate waste.
Continuous improvement, called “Kaizen” in Japanese, is one of the pillars of Lean Management. And while it is an important part of Lean, it is not the only part. The Lean philosophy goes beyond just continuous improvement (although a creative mind can connect many parts of Lean to continuous improvement).
You learn by doing, which is what continuous improvement is all about. It gives a lot of energy when colleagues enjoy improving and become inspired. Performance goes up, the customer is better served, there is more job satisfaction and commitment. This method has a positive impact on team development, because the suggestions come for the most part directly from the shop floor.
