ISO certification

What does ISO certification entail?

ISO certification means assessing an organization’s operations against a formal ISO standard. These standards, created by international experts, describe the elements necessary for reliable business operations. The implementation of an ISO standard is often documented in a quality management system. All ISO standards can essentially be traced to the PDCA cycle, in which planning, execution, control and adjustment are essential. An independent third party tests the quality management system during an ISO certification, resulting in the issuance of an officially recognized certificate based on the results.

ISO certification: continuous improvement

There are many opinions about ISO certification. Some organizations see it as a necessary evil, while others use it to support and optimize daily operations. Although an organization can function perfectly well even without ISO certification, having such certification can be an excellent tool for continuous improvement of business operations.

Better internal business processes

ISO certification offers benefits depending on the organization. It is often required in tenders and collaborations as a means of assessing the quality of participants. Governments may also require ISO certification. But the greatest benefits are for organizations that are serious about quality management, as it translates into improved internal business processes and ultimately a better end result for external stakeholders.

Various ISO certifications

For quality management systems, the most well-known standard is ISO 9001. This is a generic standard that is widely applicable. There are also specific standards in the field of quality management that prescribe specific details of an industry in detail. Think, for example, of medical equipment or the automotive industry. So these are actually ISO 9001-plus standards. In addition to quality, there are other topics that are defined in an ISO standard.

In the field of operational and industrial safety (ISO 45001, for example), but also in the field of the environment (ISO 14001). And what to think of information security (ISO 27001)! Of course, one can also choose to certify for multiple standards. It is therefore important to first carefully examine which standards are most appropriate for the organization.

How do you achieve ISO certification?

To become ISO certified, an organization must demonstrate that they operate to the desired standard. The certification process starts with the creation of a quality management system. This must then be actually implemented, monitored regularly and adjusted where necessary. If the organization finds the system working efficiently, it can apply for certification. A certification body will then conduct regular audits and if the results are positive, a certificate is granted for 3 years. External assistance is often used during initial certification.
